Surfing Locations in Cornwall

One of the greatest advantages of learning to surf with Bude Bay Surf School is our access to two of North Cornwall's finest surf beaches — Crooklets and Summerleaze. Both beaches sit within easy reach of Bude town centre and between them offer an exceptional range of conditions suitable for every ability, from absolute beginners catching their very first wave to intermediate and advanced surfers looking for something with a little more power. Rather than being tied to a single spot, we monitor the tides and conditions daily and select whichever beach gives you the very best and safest surfing experience for your lesson on that day.

Benefits of Surfing at Crooklets Beach

  • Consistent Atlantic swell making it one of North Cornwall's most reliable surf spots
  • Variety of peaks including both left and right-handers to suit different styles and abilities
  • More powerful, punchy waves ideal for progression and intermediate to advanced surfing
  • Surfable from low to high tide with excellent conditions across the tidal range
  • Less crowded than many comparable beaches, giving you more space in the water
  • Within easy walking distance of Bude town centre with parking, toilets and cafés nearby
  • Home to the Bude Surf Life Saving Club providing an additional layer of safety and local expertise

Crooklets Beach - a great beach to surf

Crooklets Beach is Bude Surf School's home base and one of the most consistently reliable surf spots on the North Cornwall coast. Picking up clean Atlantic swell on a regular basis, Crooklets offers a variety of peaks and both left and right-hand breaks — including the well-known right-hander off Wrangles Rock and the left-hander by Barrel Rock — giving surfers of different styles and abilities something to work with on almost any given day. The waves here tend to carry a little more power than neighbouring beaches, making Crooklets particularly well suited to intermediate and progressing surfers who are ready to push beyond the basics and develop their technique in more dynamic conditions. While the beach can be surfed across the full tidal range, many surfers find the best conditions from low to mid tide, with the hour around high tide delivering smaller, more peeling waves that are excellent for working on timing and footwork. Despite being one of Bude's most popular surf beaches, Crooklets retains a more relaxed atmosphere than many comparable spots, and our instructors know exactly where to position lessons to make the most of the space available. Located within easy walking distance of Bude town centre, the beach benefits from a nearby car park, public toilets, and cafés — making it a convenient and comfortable base for a full day of surfing. The presence of the Bude Surf Life Saving Club also adds an important dimension of local safety expertise that gives both students and parents additional peace of mind.

Benefits of Surfing at Summerleaze Beach

  • Gently sloping sands creating long, slow-breaking waves — ideal for beginners and improvers
  • Protective southern breakwater softening larger swells for more consistent, manageable surf
  • Long peeling right-hander offering excellent practice runs for surfers of all abilities
  • Surfable at all tides with high tide particularly well suited to beginner surf lessons
  • RNLI lifeguards on patrol daily from April to October between 10am and 6pm
  • The Bude Sea Pool located on the beach provides a safe, non-tidal environment for building paddling and balance confidence before heading into the open ocean
  • Level access, nearby parking, public toilets and outdoor showers for ease and convenience

Summerleaze Beach  - a great beach to surf

Summerleaze Beach sits just a short walk from the heart of Bude town centre and is widely regarded as one of the most beginner-friendly surf beaches in Cornwall. Its gently sloping sandy bottom allows waves to break slowly and evenly across distances of up to 200 metres, giving new surfers plenty of time and space to find their feet — quite literally. A protective southern breakwater helps to soften larger Atlantic swells, creating more consistent and manageable surf even on days when other nearby beaches may be too rough for lessons. This natural shelter, combined with the beach's long peeling right-hander, makes Summerleaze an ideal environment for building confidence in the water at any stage of your surfing journey. During the main season from April to October, RNLI lifeguards patrol the beach daily between 10am and 6pm, adding an important layer of safety that makes it a particularly popular choice for families and younger surfers. One of Summerleaze's most unique features is the Bude Sea Pool — a natural tidal swimming pool located on the beach itself — which provides a completely safe, non-tidal space where less confident swimmers can practise paddling and balancing before venturing into the open ocean. With level access, outdoor showers, public toilets, and parking all close at hand, Summerleaze is as practical as it is picturesque.
